Congolese Moïse Kabagambe, 24, was a young refugee who had been living in Rio de Janeiro since 2014 with his mother and siblings. In January 2022, he was brutally beaten to death after going to collect a work debt at a kiosk in Barra da Tijuca, west of Rio de Janeiro. The reaction of the African community living in Brazil was immediate, and protests for justice were organized in several cities. In São Paulo, an action was held on Avenida Paulista, bringing together members of the African community from various countries, shouting “Justice for Moise” amid chants and posters in tribute to the young man.
