The record drought that hit the rivers of the Amazon in 2024 caused Lago do Aleixo in the eastern part of the city of Manaus, one of the largest lakes in the region with almost 25 square kilometres near the meeting of the Negro and Solimões rivers, to dry up and be reduced to just a channel through which it was possible to walk with ankle-deep water and navigate in small boats. The area dried up completely, changing the landscape where even vegetation grew in the middle of the land that was once flooded.
